Haptics - The science of touch. The word comes from the Greek ‘haptikos’, meaning ‘being able to come into contact with’. The study of Haptics emerged from advances in virtual reality that required a refinement of techniques for defining and mastering touch. Ironically the field of Haptics is used in robotics and deals with touch independent of consciousness. Haptics is currently used in the medical field for bionic prosthetics, laparoscopic procedures and operations that are too delicate to be performed by humans without the aid and accuracy of a robot. Haptics has two distinct feedback concepts: Touch and Force. Touch, or tactile, feedback is the term applied to sensations felt by the skin. Force feedback is the term applied to sensations of force that physically resist movement. Tactile feedback conveys textures, force feedback is directional. |
